The redesigned plant will bring production of more than 15 washer models back to the U.S. and create 800 new full-time jobs.

GE Appliances has announced plans to build a clothes washer manufacturing facility at its global headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky. The company, which produces household appliances under the GE, GE Profile, and other brands, is investing $490 million in the project and creating 800 new, full-time jobs.

The new facility will be located in Building 2 at Appliance Park, expanding clothes care production to a footprint equivalent to 33 football fields. According to GE, the facility will serve as a model factory for the appliance industry, incorporating automation, robotics, and advanced material-handling technologies, including Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs).

Production will include over 15 models of front load washers, which will be reshored from China. The plant will be vertically integrated, featuring in-house manufacturing of key components like stainless-steel baskets and cabinets, precision metal stamping, injection molding, and other essential production functions. The new manufacturing lines are scheduled to begin operation in 2027.

GE Appliances will manufacture the GE Profile UltraFast Combo Washer/Dryer — a 2-in-1 appliance that washes and dries full loads in the same drum in about two hours — and the GE Profile Front Load Washer with UltraFresh Vent System+, which is designed to eliminate front-load washer odors.

The Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority (KEDFA) has preliminarily approved performance-based incentives through the Kentucky Business Investment program. Additional support includes workforce training grants and funds for building modernization, pending the company meeting job creation and investment goals.

What people are saying

In a recent quote, Kevin Nolan, president & CEO, GE Appliances, said, “We are bringing laundry production to our global headquarters in Louisville because manufacturing in the U.S. is fundamental to our ‘zero-distance’ business strategy to make appliances as close as possible to our customers and consumers. This decision is our most recent product reshoring and aligns with the current economic and policy environment.”

Andy Beshear, Governor, Commonwealth of Kentucky, added, “Today’s announcement further secures Louisville as the global headquarters of GE Appliances, a Haier company, and brings more world-class, unparalleled appliance manufacturing back to the United States. This new investment strengthens one of our vital Kentucky assets and underscores our state’s reputation as America’s destination of choice for advanced manufacturing and job creation.”
