Genentech invests $700M to build biotechnology manufacturing plant in North Carolina
Genentech has announced plans to build a new biotechnology manufacturing plant in Holly Springs, North Carolina. The company, which develops and produces medicines for serious or life-threatening diseases, will invest $700 million in the project and create 400 new jobs.
The 700,000-square-foot facility will be a high-volume fill-finish operation designed to support Genentech’s current product portfolio and future medicines. The plant will help meet increasing demand for the company’s therapies.
The company’s expansion will be supported in part by a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) approved by North Carolina’s Economic Investment Committee. Over a 12-year period, the project is expected to grow the state’s economy by more than $3 billion. Based on performance, Genentech may receive up to $9.8 million in reimbursements through the JDIG program. Because the facility is located in Wake County, classified as a Tier 3 county, the agreement also includes a provision to transfer over $3.2 million into the state’s Industrial Development Fund – Utility Account to support infrastructure in rural communities.
