GlobalFoundries invests $16B to expand semiconductor manufacturing facilities in New York and Vermont
GlobalFoundries has announced plans to expand its semiconductor manufacturing and advanced packaging capabilities in New York and Vermont. The company, which produces essential semiconductors used across AI, communications infrastructure, aerospace, and automotive applications, is investing $16 billion into the project, creating thousands of new jobs.
The expansion includes more than $13 billion to upgrade and scale its existing facilities, along with $3 billion dedicated to research and development in packaging innovation, silicon photonics, and next-generation gallium nitride (GaN) technologies. Part of this investment also supports the recently launched New York Advanced Packaging and Photonics Center, the first U.S.-based facility focused on silicon photonics packaging.
Technologies featured at the expanded facilities include 22FDX, silicon photonics, and GaN-based power solutions. These platforms are tailored to meet surging demand for power efficiency and high bandwidth across AI-enabled datacenters and devices. Production of these technologies is already underway in New York, with advanced development efforts continuing in Vermont.
GF is also collaborating with leading technology companies such as Apple, SpaceX, AMD, Qualcomm, NXP, and General Motors to strengthen U.S.-based semiconductor supply chains.
