Alstom has opened its Plant 4 manufacturing facility in Hornell, New York. The company, which produces smart and sustainable mobility solutions, invested $75 million into the project and created 258 new jobs. The 135,000-square-foot facility expands Alstom’s capabilities to manufacture stainless steel car body shells domestically, helping to reshore production from its previous site in Brazil. Plant 4 sits on land in Hornell and strengthens Alstom’s position as the largest passenger train manufacturing site in the United States.
Production at the facility will include 200 multilevel commuter rail cars for Chicago’s Metra system. The manufacturing process uses automated welding robots to perform tens of thousands of precise welds within 1 millimeter, supported by advanced AI that enables efficient, safe, and accurate collaboration between machines. The project received support through grants, job credits, and tax credits from several agencies, including the New York Empire State Development, the U.S. Economic Development Administration, and local and federal partners.

Plant 4 upholds our long-standing commitment to making trains in America, and it expands our ability to deliver cutting-edge rail solutions for our customers. We thank Governor Hochul and all our state, local and federal partners for their support.”
