An OSHA investigation has uncovered that a beef processing plant in Green Bay, Wisconsin, failed to provide adequate machine guards to protect employees from injuries while operating machinery. A worker at JBS Green Bay Inc. had several fingers crushed while removing a shackle from a cow moving down a trolley line. The fingers ultimately had to be amputated. OSHA investigators cited the company for four repeat, four serious and two other-than-serious violations. JBS Green Bay will have to pay $227,786 in penalties.

In a recent quote, OSHA Area Director Robert Bonack said, “Unfortunately, injuries to workers in the meat processing industry are common but they can be prevented when required safety procedures are followed. JBS Foods is well aware of these typical industry hazards and of their legal obligation to provide employees with a safe and healthful workplace.”
