If it seems like a new factory gets announced every other day, you're not just seeing things.
New data from the U.S. Census bureau released at the start of June indicate that manufacturing construction has more than doubled over the past year, from $90 billion in June 2022 to almost $190 billion in April 2023.
Noah Sheidlower of Business Insider observes that "many battery and electric vehicle factories have popped up in the Rust Belt, while solar panel and renewable energy factories now span much of the South and Southeast."
These data follow a recent report which shows that reshoring and foreign direct investment (FDI) job announcements for the first quarter are up 11% from last year, with added jobs centered on electrical equipment, computer & electronics, transportation equipment, and chemicals.
