Supplies at Work: Henan Longyu selects Emerson to automate coal gasification process
Henan Longyu Coal Chemical Industry Group has selected Emerson Process Management's (www.EmersonProcess.com) DeltaV (www.deltav.com) process automation system to control the coal gasification process at a new chemical plant in Henan province, China.
The new plant will use the WuHuan Gasifier process to produce 400,000 tons per year of acetic acid and 200,000 tons per year of ethylene glycol. Total project investment is estimated at more than $600 million US dollars.

Supplies at Work: ABB wins order to make Quebec’s grid more energy efficient
ABB (www.abb.com) has won an order worth over $50 million from Hydro-Québec (www.hydroquebec.com/en) to upgrade components of Canada’s power utility’s ultra-high voltage transmission system that helps transport clean hydroelectric power from North to South Quebec.
The two SVCs (Static Var Compensators) in the Nemiscau substation, about 1,000 kilometers north of Montreal, provide fast-acting reactive power compensation in the 735 kilovolt electricity network.
SVCs compensate for fluctuations in the voltage and current of an electric grid, thereby allowing more power to flow through the network while maintaining network safety and stability. They are part of ABB’s family of flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS) technologies.
By boosting power capacity in existing grids, FACTS technologies enable more power to reach consumers with minimal environmental impact, lower investment costs and shorter implementation times than the traditional alternative of building new power plants and transmission lines. They also help address voltage and frequency stability issues and enable the transmission system to run more efficiently.

Supplies at Work: Soil Machine Dynamics selects IFS to improve project management
Soil Machine Dynamics (SMD, http://smd.co.uk/) has chosen IFS Applications (www.ifsworld.com) as its enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. SMD is hoping to integrate processes across a number of locations, delivering benefits including improved operational efficiency and better project management.
Founded in 1971, SMD provides a range of subsea remotely operated vehicle systems (ROVs) from work-class to more specialist vehicles such as trenching and cable burials. The company’s specialist equipment is also used in subsea mining, marine renewable energy and nuclear decommissioning sectors.
IFS Applications 7.5 will be used to handle the design, engineering and manufacturing of SMD’s systems, and the management of the projects for a range of customers. As part of the contract, SMD will also receive Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) functionality via IFS Applications.
