Uber to put self-driving Volvo SUVs on the road in Pittsburgh

Uber Technologies Inc. will enable customers in Pittsburgh later this month to summon rides from autonomous vehicles, a bid to be the first in a race among automobile and technology companies to make driverless cars widely available.

On Thursday, Uber said it would soon put 100 Volvo Car Corp. XC90 sport-utility vehicles on the road in Pittsburgh, where some customers will be able to summon them for short trips within the city. The SUVs will have a human helper in the driver seat in the event a trip goes awry.
