Aspiring engineers will soon be able to earn bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering from Northern Illinois University at the main campus of Rock Valley College through an enhanced partnership announced by leaders of the two schools.
Rockford's manufacturing-heavy economy has become more diverse in recent decades. Robots and high-tech electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic systems have replaced the big looms, lathes and greasy machines that once filled so many of the city's factory floors. Employers have embraced this advanced manufacturing, but the workforce can't keep up.
