ABB employee Dave Madden, who cycled across the U.S. for charity along with his friend Derek Fitzgerald, concluded their journey yesterday on the beach in Avalon, New Jersey.
Dave Madden is the Standards & Certification Engineer at ABB’s Measurement & Analytics Warminster, Pennsylvania operations. Starting on the Santa Monica pier in California on Tuesday June 9, 2015, Dave and Derek began their bicycle ride to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society charity. The duo cycled a total of 3416.5 miles and made 1,076,212 pedal strokes and climbed a cumulative total of 138,959 feet in elevation on their journey across the U.S.
Earlier this week, ABB welcomed Dave and Derek at its Warminster, PA facility, for a welcome home reception and check presentation. The two cyclists stopped in Warminster, along with their support vehicle driver Maire Reynolds, to visit with colleagues and friends before they continued on to complete their 3,400 mile journey.
The "Tour for a Cure" journey took 44 days and ended yesterday on the beach at Avalon, New Jersey. ABB sponsored the ride, via its ABB Foundation, by matching all ABB employee charitable donations made in support of this great effort.
“What an epic adventure it was and the final day was amazing,” said Dave Madden. “We had a police escort out of Philadelphia to the Ben Franklin bridge. Then we rode 70+ miles to Avalon where two of my boys (Brian & Sean) joined the tour for the last four miles. The Avalon police escorted us from the bay bridge to the 32nd street beach where we dipped our front wheels into the Atlantic Ocean. Thank you ABB for the wonderful support.”
Dane Maisel, General Manager of ABB’s Warminster operations, said, “We are proud of Dave and Derek’s achievement and the opportunity to support an employee in pursuit of such a noble cause. Amazing on its own, but exciting also in that it reflects what our company represents – thousands of talented individuals working together as a team to accomplish seemingly impossible goals for our employees, customers and communities every day.”
ABB’s Measurement & Analytics business built a webpage where anyone can view Dave and Derek’s journey across the country and donate to show support. The website is located at www.abb.com/tourforacure and includes an interactive map that tracked their progress and showed key measurements at each stage of the journey.
The ABB Foundation’s mission is to help improve the quality of life in the communities in which ABB employees live and work by funding local programs that promote education, culture, arts, health and welfare.
