NEMA’s shipment indexes for linear fluorescent T5, T8, and T12 lamps increased during the third quarter of 2010. T5 lamps showed the largest rate of growth, advancing 6.6%, while T8s and T12s registered more modest gains of 0.6 and 0.1%, respectively. The T5 index grew 48.7% from a year ago and has reached a new high of 163.4. A year-over-year increase in T8 shipments of 6.8% nudged the index to 102.7 while the index value for T12 lamps (70.1) represented a decline of 8.8% from a year ago.
Despite the annual decline in shipments, the share of T12 lamps increased by over four percentage points during the quarter reaching 30.4%. This is likely not to continue as the July 1, 2010 phase-out of magnetic ballasts has not yet had the full effect on T12 shipments. The market share for T5 lamps decreased slightly to 7.3% while T8 lamps remained dominant with a 62.2% share of total shipments.
