Monitoring energy efficiency in utilities for reducing cost

Many companies still only measure natural gas and electricity only at the custody transfer point. Using these few measurements, however, important parameters like specific energy consumptions are determined that give important indications such as how much energy does it take to make a tonne of product? These measurements are typically only taken on a monthly or sometimes even on a yearly basis.
