ABB adds functional enhancements to System 800xA including real-time production intelligence

ABB has added several major functional enhancements to its Industrial Extended Automation System 800xA. These extensions include a flexible and scalable SIS (safety instrumented system) for reduced risk to personnel, equipment and environment; Manufacturing Management to improve batch production efficiency; Real-Time Production Intelligence for monitoring and improving overall equipment efficiency; and numerous other engineering and device management tools and enhancements.
System 800xA's integration capability allows customers to combine data from traditionally disparate automation-related applications into a single integrated information view in real-time to facilitate business impactful decisions and actions to maximize productivity.
Perhaps the most significant addition to the system is real-time production intelligence. This feature allows owners to tap into hidden productivity opportunities by determining the true performance of the factory and identify ways to improve this performance. This is specialized software designed for plant engineers and production managers for use in determining the on-line OEE (overall equipment effectiveness) of production equipment and processes. By automatically collecting data in real-time, this software is able to record, analyze, and present the individual machine and combined process availability, performance, and product quality factors that determine overall production efficiency. The resulting information can be used to remove process bottlenecks, and thereby improve overall manufacturing throughput and product quality.
Real-TPI stores all necessary context data for every event, allowing meaningful analysis and identification of the weakest link in the production line. It also calculates the OEE values and other key performance indicators for the selected period and machines. All screens are updated online.
This software attempts to harness the analytical power of three industry standard production evaluation processes: OEE, root cause analysis (RCA), and total productive maintenance (TPM).
System 800xA also offers process engineering tool integration with Integraph's INtools databases to provide reuse of resident plant information such as instrumentation, I/O configurations, wire lists and PID drawings. INtools integration allows EPCs (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) and Owner/Operators to exploit their investment in INtools design content through direct, online, bi-directional data exchange with System 800xA.
It also offers Industrial IT Training Simulator (ITS) solutions. By combining operator and maintenance training, control logic development, testing and validation, operator validation, and plant optimization studies in one system, users can maximize the value of their simulator system.
Included are Manufacturing Management modules (inventory, quality, operations, and weigh and dispense management) combined with 800xA Batch and Information Management, complete System 800xA's MES (Manufacturing Execution System) functions. The 800xA Production Management suite automates, monitors, controls and documents cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Pracitices) compliance of the manufacturing processes.
Finally, it offers a complete, scalable IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 compliant Safety Instrumented System (SIS) that spans the entire safety loop, including SIL rated AC 800M controllers, field devices, I/O modules and field actuators.
