Avery-Dennison releases high-speed RFID labeling system

A new high-speed RFID print/apply labeling system that allays user fears over misshipments due to faulty RFID labels is now available from Avery Dennison Printer Systems.

The system, called the AVERY DENNISON ALX RFID Print/Apply, encodes and prints unique RFID labels and automatically applies the encoded labels to cartons, cases and pallets. During the encoding process, the system “detects and then rejects” miscoded or unreadable RFID labels. Faulty labels are rewound with spent media carrier onto the system's rewind apparatus. The system then encodes and prints the next label, and applies it to the targeted item. The ALX RFID also features “jump-the-bump” capability that enables users to meet RFID labeling mandates with greater economic efficiency by guarding against costly label damage during printing.

“The ALX RFID's ‘detect- and-reject' and ‘jump-the-bump' capabilities work in tandem to minimize the number of ‘dead' RFID labels and maximize RFID label yields,” says Dan Williams, marketing manager for Avery Dennison Printer Systems. “They help users assure that RFID labels printed and applied to items are readable.

“Consider the system's ‘jump-the-bump' capability, which comes into play immediately after encoding, when the system prints RFID labels with bar codes and human-readable copy,” Williams continues. “With some RFID systems, the print head can make contact with the embedded RFID microchip during printing and cause damage. In contrast, the ALX system's ‘jump-the-bump' capability automatically guides the print head over the bump created by the embedded RFID microchip, ensuring the integrity and readability of RFID labels.”
 
RFID Label Format Flexibility

The AVERY DENNISON ALX RFID Print/Apply System handles diverse RFID label media and is designed for a variety of RFID labeling applications, including in-line print/apply operations on conveyors and assembly lines.

Unlike many competing RFID printers, the ALX system is not limited to a single RFID label size or format; it can process RFID labels of various size and microchip locations. During setup, the operator simply enters RFID label dimensions and chip location using the system's control panel.
