American Society of Safety Engineers announces the winners of its kids' safety-on-the-job poster contest
Children from Florida, South Carolina, Virginia and Kuwait were the first-place winners in the eighth annual American Society of Safety Engineers’ (ASSE) kids’ “safety-on-the-job” poster contest for best illustrating ‘being safe on the job.’ ASSE received over 850 posters from children aged 5-14 from 34 U.S. states and six countries. The contest is aimed at teaching children what ASSE members — their parents, relatives and friends — do every day to prevent injury and illness at work.
The first place winners are: 5-6 age group – Anna Ball, 6, of Palm Coast, Fla.; 7-8 age group — Abigail Jablon, 8, of Lexington, S.C.; 9-10 age group — Taylin Crosen, 9, Winchester, Va.; 11-12 age group — Fatima Parkar, 12, Kuwait City, Kuwait; and, 13-14 age group — Nehal Jajal, 13, Kuwait City, Kuwait.
The contest is open to ASSE members’ children, friends, co-workers’ children and/or organizations and schools they sponsor. The first-place posters are featured on the 2010 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH, May 2-8) Week poster sent to thousands of businesses worldwide. The contest winners, contestants and families will also be recognized during ASSE NAOSH Week kick-off events May 2 and 3 in Washington, D.C., at the U.S. Capitol, the Smithsonian and the U.S. Department of Labor.
All the winning posters can be viewed at http://www.asse.org/newsroom/naosh10/poster-contest-winners.php.
This year’s theme for NAOSH Week is “Mission NAOSH 2010: Safe Workplaces”. NAOSH Week is a tool ASSE members, along with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE), and more than 60 corporations and trade association partners use to help raise awareness of the importance of occupational safety and health in everyone's lives.
First-place winners receive a $1,000 savings bond. Second-place winners receive a $500 savings bond, and third- and fourth-place winners receive a $200 savings bond. All contest entrants receive a prize and are invited, along with their families and all ASSE members and guests, to attend the ASSE poster contest recognition events at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., Monday, May 3. This is preceded by the NAOSH kick-off and poster recognition events at the Smithsonian and the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) with OSHA officials.
