The University of California, Irvine Extension offers a new course designed to help professionals within the environmental, safety and facilities fields identify and develop leadership strategies. The course, “Leadership for Environmental, Safety and Facilities Professionals,” will be held on Wednesdays starting April 9, 6:30-9:30 p.m., and concluding June 11 at the UCI Learning Center in Orange.
“There are challenges and pressures in the areas of environmental, facilities and safety management that are remarkably unique because the stakes are so high – life-changing injury or even accidental death,” says course instructor Carlos L. Rodriguez, M.S., CSP. “This course aims to help those already working in these fields to assume even greater responsibility for the overall efficiency and employee satisfaction of their operations, while at the same time enhancing their leadership skills.”
Students participating in the course will learn how to identify personal, team and organizational leadership models, resolve conflict and become an advocate for increased operational efficiency within an organization. At the end of the course, students will be able to identify various leadership styles, articulate conflict resolution and coaching strategies, as well as plan, develop and implement cost-saving initiatives to affect environmental, safety or facilities-management performance.
“Studies show that it is more cost-effective to retain an employee and groom him or her into a management position than to hire from outside the company. The worlds of facilities, environmental or safety management are no exception,” Rodriguez says.
For more information on the course, contact Judy Purewal at (949) 824- 6538 or visit www.extension.uci.edu for a course description and schedule.
