California companies create buyers’ group for renewable power
PlantServices.com
Fourteen of California’s prominent energy buyers have created a partnership called the “Green Power Group – California Affiliates.” Advanced Micro Devices, Apple Inc., BT Americas, Cisco Systems, eBay, Google Inc., Hewlett-Packard, Intel Corp., Intuit, Levi Strauss & Co., News Corp., Pactiv Corp., Patagonia and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. will be sharing best practices for purchasing and developing new sources of renewable energy. The partnership helps them meet environmental goals, reduce exposure to volatile electricity prices and support new clean technologies.
The Green Power Group – California Affiliates is the third commercial and industrial partnership convened by the World Resources Institute (WRI). The first two partnerships, the U.S. Green Power Market Development Group and the European Green Power Market Development Group, have facilitated the development of more than 600 megawatts of renewable energy through on-site projects and green power purchases. The California Affiliates say they will build on this experience to bring corporate renewable energy purchasing to significant scale in California.
The Green Power Market Development Group (www.thegreenpowergroup.org) is a project of the Climate, Energy and Pollution Program of the World Resources Institute. The World Resources Institute (www.wri.org) is an independent, nonpartisan and nonprofit organization with a staff of more than 100 scientists, economists, policy experts, business analysts, statistical analysts, mapmakers, and communicators developing and promoting policies that will help protect the Earth and improve people’s lives.
