Discouraging young girls' interest in science affects their future

Discouraging our children from their exploratory and scientific nature affects the way they view their future.

Do we as parents discourage our little girls from becoming engineers? This Verizon commercial gives an example of a girl who grew up enjoying the knowledge of science, but her parents always told her she took it too far. How can we encourage young girls so that more than 18% of women will be future engineers?
